What is a Maturity Model?

Maturity models are based on the premise that achieving overall excellence requires many small steps of continuous process improvement.

The methodologies used to improve manufacturers, such as lean, typically require changes to the 4M components: man/human resources, method, materials, and machine (equipment and technologies). Digitization is the application of enabling technologies to improve the performance of production (e.g., embedded intelligence, additive manufacturing, robotics, machine learning); enterprise management (e.g., big data, artificial intelligence); and supply-chain management (e.g., remote sensing, electronic data interchange) to address the machine component of improvement.

Digital maturity is the journey that manufacturers take to achieve digitization and involves the deployment of best practices and improving key performance indicators (KPIs). Engagement with the Digital Transformation for Manufacturers Assessment (DTMA) will lead small- and mid-sized manufacturers (SMMEs) to act and invest to digitally transform their organizations and achieve operational excellence and healthy growth. The DTMA does this by helping SMMEs teams to:

  • QUANTIFY their current state of digital maturity.
  • FOCUS on areas of weakness and constraints that limit improved performance.
  • PLAN and COLLABORATE effectively in allocating resources and implementing sustainable changes.
  • DEVELOP a foundation for continuous review and improvement of digital capabilities.
  • Repeated assessments at frequent intervals can DRIVE ongoing digital improvements, IDENTIFY new constraints as they emerge, and digitally TRANSFORM a company — leading to increased overall performance and competitiveness.
